Another legend from the Victorian era (and beyond), Spencer won four league titles with Villa and three FA cups, in 1895, 1897 (the double season) and 1905 when he captained the team. A one-club man, Spencer spent his entire career at Villa, establishing himself also as an England player known in his day as the Prince of Full Backs (he also captained his national side three times). After hanging up his boots, he stayed on at Villa as a director, up until 1936. When Peter Morris published the first proper history af Aston Villa FC in 1960, (Aston Villa, Naldrett Press) he devoted a whole chapter to Spencer, describing him as, "perhaps the greatest Aston Villa footballer of all time".
