VILLA CARDS
1985-1989
Football cards (and for that matter, stickers) went into decline in the 1980s, not least because of the absence of Topps, who for many years had been giving out cards with their gum products, and whose withdrawal left the idea almost defunct. And Villa's fortunes also slumped, with a depressing visit back to Division 2, just six years after they'd won the European Cup. Graham Taylor to the rescue, as Villa almost won the League in 1989-90...

1984-85: Esso - Football Match
A collection of cards to be affixed to a wall chart. Joined to each player card was a random club badge card, to be separated and stuck in its allotted place, the idea being to collect and 'match' players with their clubs. A Villa badge card was not issued, as it was already printed on the wall chart; Gordon Cowans was to be glued next to it. (His card is number 7 in the set of 12 pairs; it's not clear what the small '234' signifies.)
