Played for Villa: 1936-1938
Position: Outside right
Appearances: 22
Cuthbert Phillips, known to all as Charlie, joined the club at the start of 1936, another big-money saviour (they hoped) as Villa floundered near the foot of Division 1. £9,000 was Wolves's asking price, for an accomplished winger with a good strike rate; he'd scored 60-odd goals for Wolves before his transfer. He'd also captained his country, Wales, numerous times. On paper, he looked a fine prospect, but in the event returned a measly five goals for Villa in just 22 appearances, including a debut strike against Derby. One more against Stoke was his sum contrubution to the relegation season, after which he barely featured in the side. Continuing his tour of West Midlands clubs, he moved from Villa to Blues in early 1938, where he had the misfortune to experience a second relegation, at which point his career more or less ended.
