Played for Villa: 1914-1929
Position: Centre half
Appearances: 283
Aston-born Frank Moss (Senior - for his son, Frank, also played for Villa) was playing for Walsall when the Villans snapped him up in 1913. He played his first game on the eve of football's suspension, after World War I had begun. Injured in action, he managed a few war appearances for Villa but would have to wait until 1919 to kick another ball for the first team - and until 1920 to really settle in. When he did, he quickly established himself - a winner in the 1920 Cup Final, he was made club captain in 1921 and come 1924 was also captaining England in one of his five caps. That same year he stepped out at Wembley in another FA Cup final, one of several club stalwarts of the 1920s. His career began to wind down in 1928, and he relinquished the captaincy to Billy Walker. Cardiff took him off Villa's hands, but he was soon out of the game, ready to watch his son follow in his footsteps in the 1930s.
