Played for Villa: 1912-1921
Position: Goalkeeper
Appearances: 183
"Chuffer" Hardy was drafted into the Villa team as a long-term replacement for Billy George, who had kept goal since 1897. Hardy came with a fine pedigree; he had won the League with Liverpool in 1906, and was already an England international when Villa paid the Reds £1500 for his services. Straight off, he helped Villa to the 1913 Cup triumph, a match in which he was carried off injured in the second half. A couple of League runner-up spots were also enjoyed before War interrupted proceedings. During the conflict he turned out for Villa's temporary 11 a few times, then resumed normal service with another FA Cup medal in 1920. By the time he finished with Villa he had 21 England caps under his belt, over a 13-year a span of fixtures which would equate to perhaps a hundred if translated into the modern schedule. He went on to represent Nottingham Forest.
