Played for Villa: 1919-1930
Position: Outside right
Appearances: 390
Among the most often selected players in Villa's history, Dicky York was recruited during World War I, having already played for England Boys. He was instantly placed in the first team, but stuttered in his first couple of seasons and missed the 1920 FA Cup Final. He became indispensable in 1921-22, missing just one game all season, and was an automatic choice for the 1924 Cup Final. In 1925-26 he was switched from number 10 to number 7 and suddenly became a big goal scorer, netting 20 times. In 1926-27 he didn't miss a game, but only scored 12 - but rediscovered his touch in 1928-29 with 18, including a hat-trick in the 7-1 demolition of Bury. As the 1920s slipped into the 1930s, York left for Port Vale along with Arthur Dorrell, but would soon retire following injury. He was also selected for England during his Villa days.
