Played for Villa: 1920-1926
Position: Goalkeeper
Appearances: 112
During Spiers' time at Villa he was constantly in competition with Tommy Jackson for the number 1 shirt, but did enough to gain more than a hundred first-team selections. (Jackson made 163 over the same term.) His best period was in 1924-26 when he played 65 times in two seasons, seemingly sidelining Jackson for good. He is famed for a keeping howler in October 1925 in which he managed to throw the ball into his own net, sensationally giving Birmingham City their equaliser in a game where Villa had been 3-0 up with 11 minutes left. Injury forced Spiers to miss most of 1926, and with his career looking more or less finished, he was let go. As it turned out Spiers was able to make a come-back, and signed to Spurs, going on to appear 169 times for the North Londoners. He also had a brief spell at Wolves before moving into management.
