Played for Villa: 1922-1935
Position: Full back
Appearances: 368
Defensive partner with Tommy Smart for ten years, Tommy Mort was plucked from relative obscurity at Rochdale, and thrust into the limelight of the First Division and an FA Cup Final not long after (1924). One of many notable servants in the 1920s, Mort played right through into the mid-30s, collecting League runner-up medals in 1931 and 1933. Effectively a one-club man, Mort left football after his last Villa game in January 1935. In his time he was capped thrice for England, the first time alongside his club partner Tommy Smart, the next (a 3-1 away win in France) alongside club-mate George Blackburn, and the third alongside both Dicky York and Billy Walker.
