His years of service earned him an FA Cup winners' medal in 1905 and League Champions honours in 1910. As a defender, Alf (or Freddie as he was usually called) never once scored for Villa in 269 matches! After war subsided, he assumed a trainer's role at Villa Park where he stayed until shortly before his premature death at the age of 43.
