Played for Villa: 1935-1945
Position: Half back
Appearances: 152
A much-travelled player who'd even plied his trade in America for a spell, Massie was a good find. Like George Cummings he came to Villa in a vain attempt to keep the club afloat, but repaid the £6,000 investment in seasons yet to come. He captained a resurgent Villa in their promotion season of 1937-1938, and also represented Scotland 18 times. Massie continued to appear in Villa's colours regularly throughout World War II, and when normal football resumed, gave up playing to assume the vacant role of manager for five years. Although he didn't win a trophy for the club, he did build an exciting team which included Johnny Dixon and Trevor Ford among others, and during which time Villa's home attendances broke all previous records, and still stand today.
