Supplier of crosses to Waring, Walker, Houghton et al during the most prolific season in goal scoring history (Villa set the all-time record of 128 goals in 1930-31), Jack 'Potter' Mandley could also find the net himself. In his 112 games, he scored 26 times including eight in that famous campaign; two of these came in the 7-0 thrashing of Man United, another in the 8-1 drubbing of Middlesbrough. Villa bought him from Port Vale in 1930, and he played until 1934 when he lost his position. In his comparitively short time with the club he was League runner-up twice.
