Villa had secured him in 1902 after a lengthy spell as captain of Small Heath [Birmingham City] where he had just suffered relegation, and for the next half-decade he was a regular in the Villa team. He represented his country five times, and is also noted for exposing match-fixing by Manchester City, following an attempted bribe.
