Played for Villa: 1919-1928
Position: Inside forward
Appearances: 261
Kirton arrived at Villa seemingly from nowhere in October 1919, and from his first kick, he never missed a game all season. Come April he was walking out in the FA Cup final, and proceeded to score the winner late in the game. He played in the final again four years later, but this time Villa were unlucky. Kirton's eight seasons of first-team football saw him score 59 times for the club. (He was selected for England in 1921 and managed to score then, as well.) Kirton was sold to Coventry in 1928 but by then his career was practically over, and he only played 16 times for the Sky Blues. In the 1920s, Villa were blessed with some formidable strikers, and Kirton's reputation has tended to be overshadowed by the likes of Walker and Waring. Nevertheless he is remembered as a fine goal-getter who brought silverware to Villa in that 1920 Cup Final.
