Played for Villa: 1904-1920
Position: Centre forward
Appearances: 372
One of the true legends of Aston Villa history, "Happy" Harry Hampton holds the club record for league goals, netting 215 in 338 games. He was just as effective in the FA Cup where he scored 27 in 34 games. It was Hampton who scored both goals in the 1905 final, the first after just two minutes, this being the first of two FA Cup triumphs at Villa, to which he added a League title medal in 1910. (That season, he scored hattricks in two successive matches - then did the same again, a few weeks later!)
Unsurprisingly, Hampton was also selected for England where he also netted two in four games - the interruption of World War I stopping him from achieving even more. And it was armed conflict which curtailed his career; having been injured by gas attacks in the Somme he resumed playing for Villa in 1918 but was used only occasionally. Villa offloaded him to Birmingham in 1920, where up against Second Division defenders, he rediscovered his golden touch, banging in 31 league goals for the Blues and helping them win their division. Hampton is rightly remembered as one of Villa's all-time greats, and their second-highest goal scorer ever.
