Played for Villa: 1927-1936
Position: Half back
Appearances: 225
Born into a Scottish footballing family, Gibson was very highly rated in his day and his move from Partick Thistle to Villa in 1927 broke the transfer record at £7,500. He repaid the investment with 225 appearances, including two seasons where Villa were League runners-up (1931 and 1933). Sadly his last two appearances were at the tail end of the 1935-36 season when Villa went down to the second division. Gibson was capped eight times by Scotland, four while at Villa, including the 5-1 drubbing of England in 1928, which earned the Scottish side the nickname, the Wembley Wizards. His final game for Villa, a win against Wolves, marked his retirement from the game.
