Played for Villa: 1934-1938
Position: Half back
Appearances: 79
Something of a squad player, Tommy Gardner passed through Villa on his journey from club-to-club in a professional career which spanned 1929-1947 and six different sides. His first club was Liverpool but he was with Hull when Villa purchased him in 1934. He proved to be a useful acquisition, taking over duties from Jimmy Gibson in the mid-1930s. His Villa years proved to be the pinnacle of his career (despite the relegation season), and he bagged his solitary goal for the club against Fulham in January, 1937, as it happened, the winner. His next challenge came at Burnley, where he stayed until after World War II ended. Gardner was capped for England while at Villa, and was renowned for his long throw-ins, one of which supplied Dai Astley with a celebrated headed goal against Wolves in a 2-1 win at the start of season 1934-1935.
