Played for Villa: 1922-1929
Position: Forward
Appearances: 156
Len Capewell perhaps doesn't get the acclaim he deserves, being somewhat in the shadow of contemporary strikers like Billy Walker and Pongo Waring, both of whom he had to compete with for first-team football. Capewell came to Villa from Wellington Town (now Telford United), running out for Villa and scoring on his debut in April 1922. In the Cup-final season of 1923-24 he scored six times in the campaign and played in the final, and also scored 26 league goals, including a hat-trick against Spurs. He knocked in four in a match against Port Vale the following season, and was even better in 1925-26, when he scored five on the opening day, and proceded to net in eight successive matches through September and October, and hit another seven in four games in November including another hat-trick. He ended that season with a tally of 34 goals in 38 matches, three more than Billy Walker ever managed in a single campaign. His final goal, Villa's only strike against West Ham in September 1928, neatly rounded off his career on exactly 100. After sticking with Villa in the reserve team, he eventually left for Walsall in early 1930. Had his peak years not overlapped those of two Villa goal-scoring legends, his name would be much better known.
